Netflix and The Pokémon Company are reportedly teaming up to create a live-action Pokémon TV series, with production in the early stages of development.
Speaking with Variety, sources confirmed that the two companies have begun work on the adaptation but that the show has not been officially confirmed and may be canceled before it goes into full production.
Although very little is known about the potential series, Joe Henderson is apparently linked as both a writer and executive producer. He is perhaps best known for his role as executive producer for the Netflix show Lucifer.
The same sources revealed that this live-action adaptation would be similar to the 2019 film Detective Pikachumerging live-action with CGI to create realistic versions of pokémon.
Netflix already has a relationship with The Pokémon Company. In the US, Netflix currently hosts anime series Pokémon: Indigo League And Pokémon Travel.
A live-action Pokémon would be just the latest in a series of projects Netflix is developing based on video games. Netflix already has a collection of deals with Ubisoft to create content based on game franchises like Splinter Cell, Assassin’s Creed, The Division, and Far Cry. And in February, Netflix announced that a new Sonic the Hedgehog animated series will arrive in 2022.
