Id Software canceled Doom Eternal’s planned Invasion mode and replaced it with a single player horde mode. Canned Invasion Mode would have allowed one player to invade another player’s game and start controlling monsters, adding a Dark Souls element to this run and shoot shooter. But COVID-19 delays forced developers to give up on this mode altogether.

By canceling Invasion mode, Id is focusing on a horde mode instead. They also hope to revamp the existing Battlemode to make it more engaging for players.

“We have decided to redirect our attention from Invasion mode to creating an entirely new single player horde mode,” said Id Software in a blog post. “We are confident that this Horde mode will offer you more of the diversity and challenges you are looking for in the game. Additionally, the team continues to work on a Battlemode update that includes a more competitive, rank-based structure, a host of gameplay and balance updates, and another new map.

Other than announcing what they are doing, Id has provided very few details on these changes or modalities. However, they did mention that more details would be revealed at the annual QuakeCon in August.

Meanwhile, next-gen gamers can enjoy the Doom Eternal performance patch, now available for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X | S players. And players with a Game Pass can now experience Doom Eternal for the first time, which should bring even more players into the “tear and tear” fold of Doom’s fandom.
