The digital event of E3 2022 has been canceled, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced. This follows on from the previously announced cancellation of the E3 physical event, meaning there won’t be E3 at all this year.
Many gamers have wondered if there is still a need for E3 considering how many gaming giants simply run their own press. For example, Nintendo regularly announces important news through its Nintendo Direct streams. This has led some players to speculate that E3 may be gone forever.
Fortunately, that’s not the case. As reported by IGN, ESA is planning a bigger and better E3 comeback next year. “We will devote all our energy and resources to deliver a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer,” ESA said in a statement. “Whether enjoyed from the showroom or your favorite devices, the 2023 Showcase will bring together the community, media and industry in a whole new format and interactive experience. We can’t wait to introduce E3 to fans from around the world live from Los Angeles in 2023 “.
In other words, the future of E3 appears to be a combination of the main in-person event and streaming events that anyone can watch from home. And if you’d rather watch some summer game news streams this year, you’re in luck – Geoff Keighley will once again host his popular Summer Game Fest.
While details on this year’s show are scarce, last year’s Summer Game Fest lasted a month and featured developer interviews, exciting streams, interesting revelations, and more. And we bet this year’s Fest will jump out of the water last year.
Do you think the future of E3 will be able to compete with the Summer Game Fest? Let us know in the comments!
