Baldur’s Gate is one of the true classics of video game history. The original game was released in 1998, but in 2012 an advanced edition was released for PC and mobile devices.

This means it’s easier than ever to dive back into this world of swords and sorcery. But is this classic game worth your time when there are so many other fantasy games?

A familiar world

If you don’t already know, Baldur’s Gate is set in the world of Dungeons and Dragons. This means that players who enjoy playing that classic board game will find it easier to understand the elements of the story and gameplay.

However, that doesn’t mean you have to be a tabletop veteran to dive into Baldur’s Gate. The game is intuitive, and a number of on-screen hints will help even beginners navigate this world.

And the Enhanced Edition has made these tips more abundant and more useful, making this game one of the easiest-to-use introductions to this familiar world.

Heroes unite

If you’ve played one of Bioware’s later games, the character selection in this game will feel familiar to you. As in games like Knights of the Old Republic and Dragon Age, you have a single main character and a series of secondary characters to help you in your missions and battles.

These characters generally fall into various RPG tropes as “grumpy wizard”. However, each character has a rich background and complex dialogue that helps them feel real and unique.

Much of the replayability of the game comes from understanding how different characters interact and help or hinder the construction of your current character. And as an added bonus, the Enhanced Edition adds three new characters to the mix.
