Intrepid presents a unique challenge as a first outing for its creator Phoenix Labs. Many workers ended up in Phoenix after abandoning ship from larger studios like Blizzard and Capcom.

Dauntless launched in May 2019 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One after spending a year in beta for PC. The game must find a place in the increasingly crowded market for live-service titles.

Then, there is the challenge of matching or exceeding the quality of Monster Hunter’s games from which he clearly draws inspiration. It’s a tough spot for any game, much less an inaugural project like this one.

History

Dauntless doesn’t exactly help her case by opening with a curiously similar storyline to that of Monster Hunter: World.

After designing a personal avatar, the player quickly enters the fray as a fresh-faced huntress. On your way to hunt the mythical Behemoth creatures, you are stuck and forced to fight for survival.

Shortly thereafter, you will be ferried to the central town of Ramsgate. There, further hunts are undertaken and the rest of humanity carries out its various trades.

The details of the construction of the world are largely relegated to the text distributed by the various NPCs giving missions scattered throughout Ramsgate. A vague sense of escalating conflict and technological advancement begins to manifest itself in the midst of a possible apocalypse. But it is less important than what players will experience most of their time with the game.
