Grab pencils, backpacks and big axes because we’ll be back to school in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Released in July 2019 for the Nintendo Switch, the latest installment in the long-running series chooses to study what has worked from previous efforts and declare a new direction for the franchise.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses offers a new story with branching paths, a reworked combat system and a unit management system where you play as a school teacher. Does he fail or pass with flying colors?
History
The story of Three Houses, as the name suggests, follows three different paths in the game depending on which house you partner with. The story begins after meeting the leaders of the three houses and rescuing them from the bandits. They invite the player, named Byleth by default, to Garreg Mach Monastery.
The monastery serves as both the seat of the Church of Seiros and an academy for young officers. Surprisingly, the school hires Byleth as its new professor despite the fact that he doesn’t have a resume to talk about. From there the player chooses which house to teach and command in battle.
Three houses
The black eagles, blue lions and golden deer comprise the three houses of Fódlan, each led by young charismatic nobles who will soon inherit the thrones of their kingdoms.
I sided with the chivalrous Prince Dimitri, a knight in training with piercing blue eyes and a dark past. Knockoff Griffith leads the Blue Lions, an eclectic group of seven boys from his home in Faerghus.
Each of the students from the three houses exhibits different personalities and backgrounds. Choosing one house over the other can completely change how you play and which characters you interact with, giving the game a lot of replay value.
