Characters

You start Guild Wars 2 by selecting one of the five races, which is entirely down to personal preference, as racial abilities become irrelevant very quickly. It’s more about which breed you find most aesthetically appealing. Much of Guild Wars 2 is about aesthetics.

Next, choose your class. Here you will find the familiar archetypes: wizards, warriors, rogues, rangers, and healers. But you will also find that the classes are not as strict as those in other MMORPGs. Each class is playable in various ways.

Warriors, typically a tank or damage class, can support by planting banners and rumbling shouts. Mesmers, an illusionist-style class who typically fill the supporting role, can get their fill of evasions and illusions. Rangers, usually limited to a pure damage class, can heal with their druid form.

Weapons

Once you’ve got your race and class and spent a lot of time deciding a character’s name, you need to learn a few skills. In Guild Wars 2, this means choosing which weapons to use.

Each class can use an arsenal of weapons, and each weapon allows your character to use a different set of skills. You can switch weapons at any time, so you’re not stuck with a choice for eternity.

Mode

Now you have to decide how you want to play: follow the immense and immersive story, go directly into battle against other players in 5v5 battles, or compete with the entire server against two others for control of a huge battlefield in World vs World.

Each mode earns you experience, levels and gear. So, just do what you find most fun. You can easily switch between modes whenever you want.
