Jump Force is the kind of game that a lot of people won’t know what to do about. After all, it’s based on the Shonen Jump manga, with a whole host of characters from all anime series. This includes the fighters of dragon ball, NarutoAnd Yu-Gi-Oh! Released to celebrate the franchise’s 50th anniversary, it’s a fighting game that has a niche appeal. But can it turn out to be a good enough game to appeal to a wider audience of gamers?

Game

As a fighting game, combat is the most important aspect of Jump Force. Getting into battle can actually be quite fun. The basic controls are intuitive and very easy to use. However, there is also some complexity in the mechanics that allows you to make satisfying moves if you do them right. A great inclusion is the ability to switch between characters during fights, although they all share a health bar. Swapping fighters gives you the ability to try and be strategic in battles.

Although Jump Force has included a story mode to play, it adds nothing to the game. The developers could have used this opportunity to include different types of missions. Instead, everything follows the same basic formula without the possibility of variation. Spend your time moving around the hub of the world, switching between combat, all of which seem identical to each other.

Jump Force also lacks many common features in games. It is as if the developers are distracted by the characters and neglect the basic mechanics that are needed in modern titles. For example, there is no map to help you navigate the world. Instead, you have to wander around and hope to find your target. Things like that are what you generally expect to see in any game and rarely think about. Yet, without them, Jump Force becomes incredibly frustrating to play.
