Perhaps the most popular genres for indie games are action and platforming. After all, they’re better suited to smaller teams and pixel art styles than most others. It is therefore not surprising that there are titles like Katana ZERO, which combines the two. Developed by Askiisoft and published by Developer Digital, it was released for PC and Nintendo Switch in April 2019.
At first glance, you might think this is just another highly stylized action title. Katana ZERO definitely resembles other nail-hard games, with a striking resemblance to Hotline Miami. However, it strives to make its mark rather than staying in the shadows of other games. There are unique game mechanics and an intriguing storyline that set him apart from many of his contemporaries.

The real premise of Katana ZERO is quite simple. By taking control of the protagonist Subject Zero, players must wipe out all enemies in a level. Once this is done, move on to your main goal.
From the very beginning, you will have access to all the tools you will need. You have access to a powerful katana blade and the ability to slow down time. Additionally, Zero can dodge attacks or deflect bullets with a timely sword strike. Most of the levels also have a variety of environmental traps that you can activate to kill enemies from a distance.
One of the most satisfying things about the game is that you don’t have to work to unlock extra skills or new skills. In this sense, the combat system is very simple. But since you are given full access to it right away, it gives you a chance to intimately familiarize yourself with each mechanic. You don’t have to worry about upcoming changes that will significantly alter the gameplay. Everything you need to master is available right from the start.
The result is that you can understand the depth of the combat system. Without combos, it’s really about figuring out the timing of your actions. Fighting enemies becomes a kind of dance routine where you get into a rhythm and only succeed if you do the right movements at the right time. It is a very rewarding system that is a lot of fun to play.
