Monster Hunter: World is a really weird beast. Capcom’s action-RPG is undoubtedly one of the best games of the current generation. And it recently became the best-selling Capcom game of all time. Clearly, hunting down monsters the size of a skyscraper is an enticing prospect for many people.
That said, Monster Hunter remains a niche franchise that simply won’t scratch everyone’s itch. Is it a brilliant game? Yes. Is this the right game for you? Maybe not. Supposedly, fans don’t need to convince, but they’re not the ones who benefit from a review.
A new beginning
The Capcom franchise has a history of not being welcoming to newcomers. Most of the entries lack a satisfying story or tutorial. In some ways, Monster Hunter’s reluctance to lead players is one of the series’ biggest strengths.
When the main premise is to track down progressively larger monsters to create more beautiful weapons and armor pieces, there is very little sense in a narrative. The joy is in the game cycle. For lack of a more suitable phrase, Monster Hunter is pure game. A story would be just a distraction.
