Lord of the Rings Online is a free MMORPG with a loyal fan following. However, the field is filled with more MMOs than anyone has time to actually play. So, is it worth venturing into the Shire or Helm’s Deep instead of returning to World of Warcraft? Read on to find out!
Free to play (more or less)
Lord of the Rings Online bills itself as a free-to-play game. While this is true, players should be aware that there are some hidden costs.
For the most part, players play this game for its PvE storyline. However, you will eventually reach a point where you will no longer be able to access the whole story for free. Instead, you will be asked to purchase specific mission packs for the areas you are visiting.
Strictly speaking, you can always go grind yourself to a higher level and continue the general story for free. But you’ll probably enjoy it easier (and more fun) if you go ahead and purchase those quest packs.
Fortunately, you will have been playing for a long, long time before you have to make that choice. When that happens, you should know if the packages are worth your time and money.
