The original Tearaway wowed PS Vita fans with its unrivaled charm and creative use of handheld features. In 2015, Media Molecule attempted to translate that magic into television with the remake Tearaway Unfolded.
For the most part, this paper crafted platformer embodies the strengths of the original by bringing the unique play style into the DualShock 4 controller. However, the game doesn’t always benefit from the enlargement. And perhaps, Iota and Atoi’s journey was best experienced on an envelope-sized screen.
History
The story of Tearaway Unfolded doesn’t stray too far from its first iteration. You can control a male or female messenger as they traverse a world made of paper in hopes of delivering a message to you, the player. The sneaky Scraps have also invaded this world and are infecting it with their depressing newspaper clippings. I guess this could mean that the game is presenting thoughtful commentary on over-saturation of uninspired media. But in reality, the plot is more concerned with delivering charming and very British humor. While I liked this tone, the voices of the two commentators could be a little overbearing.
Visual
Fortunately, the story of Tearaway Unfolded it’s not a great focus. Instead, the visually striking world is where the developer’s effort clearly went. Each element of the levels complements the papercraft art style. And I mean every. Water is a strip of blue cardboard that drips when stepped on. Grass is a thin piece of paper that shivers in the wind. In addition, the buildings are designed from multiple tactile components. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo came up with Labo’s idea after peering through some screenshots of this game.
