Royal Quest is a free-to-play MMORPG where you pick up swords, sticks and other fantasy gear and defend a virtual kingdom.
Then again, this all sounds a little familiar. It seems that most MMOs have always been medieval “hack and slash” affairs. Does Royal Quest stand out from the pack? Or should you just give in and go back to WoW?
Family archetypes
If you’ve even just taken a look at the covers of various fantasy novels over the years, Royal Quest’s character system will look familiar. You can choose from familiar genre archetypes like Warrior, Archer, Mage, and Rogue.
This simplicity is ultimately a good choice. It makes the game more accessible to new players by not overloading them with choices right from the start. And players don’t have to be immersed in any kind of deep fantasy lore to understand and appreciate these types of characters.
Don’t worry though. There is the possibility of expanding these characters into more specialized classes such as “Crusader” and “Assassin”. This gives more experienced players a goal to aim for and offers some tempting rewards for continued play.
Cute graphics
If I only had one word to describe real research, I would go with “cute”. The characters are all colorful cartoons and inhabit an equally colorful and vibrant world.
I’ve written about it before, but cartoonish graphics for an MMO are actually a wise choice. Attempts to look super realistic are always doomed to failure, and these games end up looking very dated within a year or two of their release.
However, the cartoon-style graphics are functionally timeless. It’s a design decision that worked well for World of Warcraft, and Royal Quest couldn’t ask for a better model.
