The most noticeable feature of the Super Mario 3D World levels is how they act as a bridge between the 2D and 3D voices of the series. Nintendo had already tried this design approach in 2011’s Super Mario 3D Land on Nintendo 3DS. Here, however, more creative freedom is given thanks to the myriad of captivating mechanics that are used to their full potential by the developers.
I found myself joyfully waiting for the surprises that each new stadium had to show me. I marveled at the visually striking act of using shadows to frame the layer layout. And I loved zooming down on the slides and speed pads in a Mario Kart-style run up to the flag pole.
It was admirable how rarely did the game choose to fall back on established ideas. The uniformity of the boost from level to level was all the incentive I needed to save those fairies.
