The hit N64 Goldeneye 007 was banned from advertising or selling to children in Germany for decades. Now, Eurogamer Germany is reporting (via Eurogamer) that the ban has been lifted, leading to speculation that the title could make it to Nintendo Switch Online.

Interestingly, Germany’s ban on Goldeneye 007 would automatically expire next year, once 25 years have passed since the game’s original release in 1997. This means that Germany deliberately lifted the ban a year in advance, but because?

Eurogamer Germany and others speculate that this has been done so that Nintendo can release Goldeneye 007 in their new Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription plan. The Expansion Pack plan brought Sega Genesis and Nintendo 64 games to Switch Online subscribers in October. , but many fans thought the $ 49.99 annual price tag was too high for a handful of old games.

However, Goldeneye 007 was the most popular N64 game at the time. If Nintendo could allow modern players to relive those living room deathmatches from the 90s, the company would likely sell many additional expansion packs.

Before you raise your hopes, however, you should know that Microsoft once tried to bring an HD remake of Goldeneye 007 to Xbox 360 and ran into complex copyright issues. If Microsoft hasn’t been able to solve these problems with its deep pockets, it’s not immediately clear whether Nintendo would have better luck.
