Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition was supposed to be a celebration of their signature series, but the digital launch was a failure on multiple levels. And now, the physical release of this game has been delayed.
For Rockstar and gamers alike, this launch was a nightmare. The PC versions of the game would not originally have launched, and Rockstar ended up temporarily removing it from the digital store. Now that it’s been restored, however, PC gamers have found that the game is as disappointing for them as it is for those who play on consoles.
Why the disappointment? Gamers have encountered bugs that make Cyberpunk: Launch of 2077 perfect by comparison. In addition to the bugs that sometimes make the game impossible, players have been faced with problems such as audio compression problems and even misspelled words (especially words that are part of the background details).
The biggest offender, however, was the graphics. There are some rendering issues and issues with things like fog in games. But even when all else works, many players agree that the “remastered” models look downright ugly. In many cases, the original graphics look better in side-by-side comparisons!
That’s right, the remaster of these beloved games helped paint Rockstar as a company willing to put the least amount of work into churning out a petty cash jack. And now, the hits keep coming, with the company announcing that the physical release of these games has been delayed.
These physical releases were originally set for November 7th. Now, Rockstar promises we’ll see physical releases for Xbox (both Xbox Series X | S and Xbox One) and PS4 on December 17th. Switch owners, however, won’t get physical copies until early 2022.
But will it be worth playing the game right now? A grieving Rockstar released update 1.03 yesterday to address many (though certainly not all) player concerns. Now, the company seems confident the game will be more playable before these physical versions are released. But only time will tell if many players will still want to play a game with such a tainted reputation.
