Grand Theft Auto fans were very excited to try Rockstar’s GTA Trilogy Remastered, but that experience ended up being both bad and bad. Now, the game is getting a patch and the first patch will arrive in the next few days.
According to a recent Rockstar blog post, “The updated versions of these classic games have not been released in a state that meets our quality standards, or the standards our fans have come to expect.” Their goal with the patch is simple: they hope that “the games reach the level of quality they deserve to be”.
Of course, to say that these remastered games don’t meet “the standards our fans expect” is an understatement. There are many strange bugs affecting the gameplay, including the way cars drive causing the mysterious crash of the planes.
But the worst part is the graphics. Upgrading the old graphics to the new generation standards seemed to be simple enough. But fans were shocked to discover many instances where the original character models looked better than the remastered one. And the lazy remastering caused other strange side effects ranging from distorting the background text to turning a giant decorative die into a circle. Other players have noted occasions where they shot out of a car window and the glass simply disappeared instead of shattering as it originally did.
Adding insult to injury, Rockstar had previously removed the original games from the list, making it impossible for PC gamers to easily revert to those higher versions. And they also chased the modding community in an effort to make sure no gamers could experience the original games with improved graphics.
Despite all the backlash from fans though, Rockstar seems to have learned a few lessons. They will re-list the original PC games and look confident that this next patch will fix the remastered games. But whether these actions are enough to win over skeptical fans remains to be seen.
