Sony has reportedly delayed developer Guerrilla Games Horizon Forbidden West’s upcoming PlayStation game until the first quarter of 2022. It was previously scheduled for a 2021 holiday release. world RPG, slated for release on PS4 and PS5 consoles, is the sequel to the hugely successful 2017 PlayStation 4 exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn.

Recent signals have indicated a possible delay. Bloomberg’s report corroborates a report made Thursday by video game journalist Jeff Grubb on his Giant Bomb GrubbSnax podcast. Grubb says Sony was planning to announce the delay in a state of play in September.

Also, a possible setback seemed to come from Sony itself. On the PlayStation Blog in June, PlayStation studio head Hermen Hulst said a festive version of Horizon “isn’t quite certain yet”, even though he thought they were “on track” to make that date at the time. In the same post, Hulst announced that the God of War sequel has been postponed to 2022.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, Horizon Forbidden West joins a host of delayed games this year, including recent announcements from Ghostwire: Tokyo, SIFU, and Kena: Bridge of Spirits.

Neither Sony nor Guerilla have yet commented on the delay.
