How many times have we wondered if in the future there would be something that would have warned us during the arrival of a seismic event. A tool capable of making the difference between the life and death of each person. And this is exactly where it came into play IT-Alerta revolutionary and highly anticipated system dthe public alarm which has now made its entry into Italy.

The alarm system is still being tested, so much so that the first test of the service, started on 28 June 2023. The Civil Protection Department kicked off, explaining how IT-Alert was designed to warn the population if they are in serious danger.

IT-Alert, what it is and how it works: all the details

IT-Alert is based on Cell Broadcast technology, thus avoiding the use of GPS systems or applications. In this way, it exploits all the power of mass communication based on mobile telephone networks which allow the whole community to be reached directly and efficiently.

In a sense it’s a virtual megaphone that warns citizens that they are in an area threatened by a catastrophic event. Your smartphone will receive the automatic alert notifications thanks to the direct communication between the antennas of the mobile devices present in the area and those of the mobile telephone, without the intervention of a human person.

The developers of the service have mainly focused on the development of some catastrophic events whose consequences could undermine the life of human beings. When the system is one hundred percent operational, it will come iused to alarm the following risk rhinologies:

  • Earthquake;
  • Tsunami generated by the earthquake;
  • Dam collapse;
  • volcanic activity;
  • Nuclear accidents or radiological emergency situations;
  • Heavy rainfall.

All those who are in one of the affected areas of the emergency will receive an alert on their mobile phone with a recognizable sound. The first test occurred recently with the earthquake in central Italy, where many have received the notification. However, it is not known when the service will officially go live. For the moment, the government, together with the Civil Protection, is testing the system.
