Thirty-one years after the release of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge comes the news that we’re getting a full-fledged sequel. Most importantly, original game director Ron Gilbert is back to lead this new title.
Gilbert dropped the news via Twitter today. Impressively, he said the new game, titled Return to Monkey Island, has been secretly in development for two years.
In addition to Gilbert, Dave Grossman will return for this installment, the sixth in the series ever but the first to continue the story since 1991’s Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge finale. Grossman and Gilbert both wrote and designed the original games, so this sequel should look familiar enough. It should also sound familiar with Dominic Armato returning to lend his voice once again to series lead Guybrush Threepwood.
So far, we don’t know much more about Return to Monkey Island other than the fact that it will be released this year. Gilbert’s Terrible Toybox studio teamed up with Lucasfilm Games and Devolver Digital to bring this game to life. Considering the caliber of games these studios are making, we have high hopes that their collective magic will help this sixth Monkey Island game shine.
