Samsung and Google have made artificial intelligence a big part of their latest smartphone announcements, and now it’s time for Apple to jump on the bandwagon. Tim Cook said on the earnings call following the company’s financial report that he will talk about generative AI “later this year.”

The reasonable assumption is that the features will be introduced at WWDC in the summer, before arriving in the iPhone 16 lineup in September.

Apple suggests generative AI could come to iPhone 16

This is exactly what Tim Cook has to say about generative AI:

In terms of generative AI, which, I guess, is your focus, we have a lot of work going on internally, as I mentioned before. Our modus operandi, if you like, has always been to do a job and then talk about work and not to come out into the open. And so, we’ll keep it for that as well. But we have some things that we’re incredibly excited about that we’ll talk about later this year.

Code in iOS 17.4 suggests that Siri could use AI for summary, smart replies in Messages, and AI on apps like Apple Music, Pages, and Keynote. The company apparently isn’t set on an AI model – it’s currently testing some that are on-device and others that rely on your internet connection.
