“Touch surfaces don’t want to be vertical. It doesn’t work. It’s ergonomically terrible.” These are Steve Jobs’ famous words from the MacBook Pro launch event in October 2010. A lot has changed since then, but Apple has yet to launch a touchscreen laptop. Well, a new report from Bloomberg News suggests that Cupertino is actually considering the idea with sources close to Apple saying the company is currently testing touchscreen MacBooks that could arrive in 2025.

Apple is said to be working on a touchscreen MacBook

The touchscreen MacBook project is currently in its early stages of development, and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman expects the rumored OLED MacBook to be one of the first Macs to launch with touch screen capabilities. The laptop will house the same basic design as the MacBook but with added touchscreen capabilities.

Apple has conducted internal experiments with prototype touchscreen laptops in the past. According to a 2016 interview with Craig Federighi, those prototypes were considered a “compromise” as the touchscreen didn’t make sense in a laptop form factor that already had precise multi-touch trackpad and keyboard input.
