Apple has launched new beta versions of its various operating system branches for phones, tablets, computers, watches, set-top boxes, and AR headsets. Here’s what’s changed.
Apple Intelligence is the headline feature of iOS 18.1, but there are some growing pains. Most notably, there were rendering issues when using the new Siri UI with large Apple CarPlay displays. This should be fixed now.
iOS 18 is also in development, and Apple is currently on beta 6. This adds changes like Place ID for Apple Maps, “a unique and persistent identifier.” Another change is that if you add your ID to Wallet, you may be asked to take a photo of it, which is intended to prevent fraud.
Apple Vision Pro software developers can test visionOS 2 beta 6. The maximum placement distance between apps is increased to give users more flexibility. Additionally, compatible apps can now be moved out of the Compatible Apps folder and placed next to apps designed for visionOS (long-pinch any icon to enter “edit” mode). And look at this: you can now use game controllers to interact with the system UI.
MacOS Sequoia 15 beta 6 brings a bunch of fixes and some good news for people who are short on storage space: the App Store no longer needs twice the size of the app as free space for an initial download and install. You only need the size of the app + a little free buffer.
The stable release of iOS 18 is expected this fall; iOS 18.1 should arrive soon after.
