According to Mark Gurman’s latest newsletter, Apple is working tirelessly to fix two big problems with its VR/AR headset, the Vision Pro. People who have tried the Vision Pro complain about the weight and incompatibility of the device with different types of eyeglasses.
For the next-generation Vision Pro, Apple expects a dramatic reduction in size and improved efficiency, so it won’t require such a large external battery pack. In fact, Apple initially planned to release the Vision Pro with a built-in battery, but due to the additional weight it opted for an external battery and cable.
In an effort to make the Vision Pro lighter and more compact, the company had to make a huge compromise with the lenses. There simply isn’t enough room for glasses inside the headphones. One way to solve this problem is to provide users with customized Vision Pros with the appropriate prescription lenses. However, this would make it impossible to share the headset and resell it.
Additionally, there are too many lens combinations for an OEM to handle, and it will be a huge hassle for retail stores, who need to have all the combinations in stock. Additionally, Apple would have to become a healthcare provider and obtain a license to sell the necessary prescription lenses.
All in all, we’re far from getting a second-generation Vision Pro, but the latest report gives us an idea of what to expect from Appel’s AR/VR division in the future.
