In February, Nothing confirmed that a Snapdragon 8-series chip would power the phone (2), but didn’t reveal whether that was an existing chip or one that would launch in the future. A Qualcomm executive in a social media post said it would be the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, but the post was later edited to remove mention of that chip. However, we now have definitive confirmation that the Nothing Phone (2) will have the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 at the helm after all.
The confirmation comes from Nothing founder Carl Pei on Twitter, where he also unveiled the reasons behind choosing the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC for the phone (2). Pei said that the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 will bring a performance boost, but “it’s not just about speed, it’s about the complete package” as “choosing an 8-series Snapdragon over the 7-series brings significant improvements across the board.” line, including battery life, network connectivity, and camera functionality, among others.”
Pei also said that the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 was chosen because it “is best-in-class when it comes to power consumption and heat management.” It also ensures that “Phone (2) remains accessible while offering a significantly improved experience over Phone (1).” The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is an old chip and going with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 would have raised the price of the phone.
