Apple has announced big changes to app distribution on its iOS App Store in the EU by opening its mobile operating system to alternative app stores. Although the change is currently limited to only the 27 EU member states, Epic Games is already thinking about the return of its hit title Fortnite.
Epic Games has announced that it will bring its Epic Games Store to iOS later this year, which will feature the popular Battle Royale game. Epic has yet to provide an official launch date for its iOS game store.
This is great news considering the history between Apple and Epic Games and how Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store in 2020 for violating App Store policies that allowed users to bypass Apple’s payment system. One potential obstacle for the new Epic Games Store on iOS is the fact that Apple will have oversight of third-party app stores and will have to approve Epic’s proposal.
New changes under the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) will also allow game streaming apps on iOS, meaning we’ll most likely see Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now on iOS this year.
