introduction

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 are here and while they may look similar to their predecessors, they bring a number of key updates.

Last year it was about making the fold an everyday smartphone and not a device to be stored and protected. Samsung has taken two steps forward in technical innovation by waterproofing its folds to the IPX8 standard (water resistance up to 30 minutes in one and a half meters of fresh water) and making the Galaxy Z Fold3 compatible with the S Pen – these are two. unique features for any foldable phone even in 2022. Samsung has also beefed up the hinge and overall construction to make sure they perform better in the long run.

This year, it’s all about taking the cameras of Samsung’s foldable devices to high speed. Last year’s Galaxy Z Fold3 had a 12MP main camera dating back to the 2020 Galaxy S20, while the Flip3 was left with a 12MP sensor that we first saw on the infamous Galaxy Note7 in 2016 – ancient in terms of smartphone. So this year, Samsung did the right thing and provided both sets of cameras with some major upgrades.

So the Galaxy Z Fold4 now has a 50MP main camera and the Galaxy S22 series’ 10MP 3x zoom sensor. The ultrawide, unfortunately, is still in fixed focus. The Galaxy Z Flip4 got the main camera of last year’s Galaxy Z Fold3: a 12MP 1 / 1.76 “sensor with 1.8 µm pixels (compared to 1.4 µm on the Flip3), an increase 65% of the light harvest. The ultrawide is of the fixed focus type and there is no telephoto lens, but it is still a much more competent configuration than last year.

A probably equally important improvement on the Galaxy Z Flip4 is the battery. It is now larger than 400mAh to 3,700mAh, which, Samsung claims, allows you to stream video for an extra 3 hours. Even better, the Galaxy Z Flip4 got a much-needed boost in charging speed – the phone now charges at 25W, compared to the predecessor’s paltry 15W.

Samsung has also perfected its leaflets this year. The Galaxy Z Fold4 is lighter than its predecessor (8g) and offers slightly larger displays at the expense of thinner bezels. The cover display is 2.7mm wider, while the internal screen has grown by 3mm, to the same width as the Galaxy Z Fold3’s body.

The Galaxy Z Fold4 is also 3.1mm shorter than its predecessor and while many were hoping for an even greater reduction, it’s certainly a good step in the right direction.

The Galaxy Z Flip4 has also gotten slimmer: the hinge is 1.2mm thinner, the phone is 1.5mm shorter when closed, and the frame is flatter, which played a role in mounting the bigger battery. The main display of the Galaxy Z Flip4 also achieved a bezel reduction, although the lid display remained essentially the same.

Samsung has improved both of its leaflets this year in important ways. Battery life and camera improvements are welcome, especially when everything else is pretty much fixed. The Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 are alone at the folding party as the competition has not yet provided anything except Chinese limited production phones in the segment.

Let’s take a closer look at the two new phones now, staring at the Galaxy Fold4 on the next page.
