introduction

Remember cell phones? Someone at Samsung certainly did it and had an idea: “why not a flip phone, but a foldable screen?”. And so the Flip line was born, and sure it’s called that, what else would it do You name it? As is normal for Samsung’s brand new endeavors, the first generation was decent but not refined enough. Then enter the second coming of the flip phone, in the form of the second coming of by Samsung Flip phone: the Galaxy Z Flip3. We ignore the confusing naming, due to the fact that there was also a 5G Flip. We’re counting that as a variant of the original, because, aside from the different chipset, that’s exactly what it was.

The Flip3 is therefore the epitome of Samsung’s vision for foldable flip phones and is also, incidentally or not, the best-selling foldable device ever. Why is this so, though? This is what we decided to try to investigate, and this is how this long-term review was born. We didn’t like the Flip3 in our regular review, but we certainly didn’t see its massive popularity coming up, so there must be something we missed, right? Well, spoiler alert, not really. It’s just an attractive package for those who want a cheaper foldable phone than the others, which is also interestingly viewed by some as a fashion accessory, which certainly helps drive sales.

Long-term review of the Samsung Galaxy Flip3

But what does the Flip3 actually look like as a smartphone? After all, it’s a little weird. Yes, it folds up, but not to hide a larger screen like the Fold3. This folds to become more pocketable on two or three axes. That’s all. So does it work? We decided to figure this out by spending a long time with this as our one and only smartphone. Our journey with the Flip3 was definitely interesting and we had some unexpected revelations along the way.

We spoil one right away: we thought that closing and opening the phone dozens (if not hundreds) of times a day would always be really annoying, but we only got used to it in a few days. Looking at things rationally, it still doesn’t make much sense to add an extra step to whatever you want to do on your phone, but in real life, it’s not as big of a hassle as we thought. If this whets your appetite for more details on our results, join us on the next few pages as we analyze the Flip3 and how it performs as a daily rider.
