Arm yesterday introduced the high-power Cortex-X4 core for mobile processors along with the Cortex-A720 and Cortex-A520 cores. Mediatek followed up to confirm that its upcoming Dimensity flagship 5G SoC will feature the X4 and A720, as well as the Immortalis-G720 GPU, but did not mention the A520.
Leakster Digital Chat Station took to his Weibo account to try to offer an explanation: There’s no Cortex-A520 in the chipset; the Mediatek Dimensity 9300 will have an octa-core CPU with 4x Cortex-X4 + 4X Cortex-A720 architecture.
The chip will be built on the N4P process. It is a refined next-generation 4nm solution, providing increased performance and energy efficiency improvements over N5 and N4 processes.
According to the leakster, the Dimension 9300 would beat the eventual Apple A17 Bionic in a head-to-head comparison and also reduce power consumption by 50%, compared to the “previous generation”.
The Dimension 9300 is much more likely to follow the 1+5+2 configuration, but if Mediatek is truly willing to put four super cores in their CPU, we could see the beginning of a revolution in chipset development. For now, we’re staying reserved for such bold claims and will wait for the actual products to appear before getting overly excited.
