Pre-orders for the Apple Vision Pro began last week, and a few days ago analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple has sold between 160,000 and 180,000 units. However, the proud new owners of Apple’s space computer won’t be using them to watch Netflix.
Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters was interviewed by Strategy and there’s no Netflix app on the Vision Pro. Long story short, it’s not worth it: There aren’t enough potential subscribers owning the headphones compared to the effort it takes to port the streaming app to the platform.
That’s not to say there will never be a Netflix app on the Apple Vision Pro – Peters certainly isn’t against it, but for now the company is just waiting to see how the situation develops.
Netflix isn’t the first company to skip launching a native app for Apple headphones, YouTube and Spotify also have no plans to create dedicated apps (you can use the web browser, of course).
Cupertino’s Apple TV+ streaming service is available on the Vision Pro and it’s not just a virtual screen: the company has launched a new format called “Apple Immersive Video”, i.e. 180° 3D footage with 8K resolution and spatial audio.
Netflix launched a VR app way back in 2015 and even capitalized on its popularity Stranger things series to play a 360° video (even if he posted it on YouTube). Netflix has many other VR movies you can try. Just not on the Vision Pro.
