One of the less talked about aspects of the new Galaxy Z Fold4, unveiled a couple of days ago is its software situation. Namely, the move to Google’s Android 12L, an offshoot of the company’s popular mobile operating system designed specifically for foldable devices, tablets and Chrome OS, which debuted last year.

We’re already looking into the Z Fold4, but one of the software highlights for this year is immediately evident in the new persistent taskbar that Samsung has placed at the bottom of the UX. According to industry rumors, that taskbar will also arrive on older Galaxy Z Fold devices, along with One UI 4.1.1 “later this year”.
While this isn’t a surprising move in and of itself, it raises some interesting questions. Chief among which is whether Samsung will update all or at least its latest Fold phones to the Android “L” branch as well.
To be honest, at this point, we can’t really say how much of the new Z Fold4 One UI 4.1.1 UX is related to the new Android 12L core and just how much effort from Samsung’s custom skin is. From our short time with the Z Fold4, which you can read about in our hands-on review, we can say that many of Google’s apps come in two columns, which is easier to navigate a square display and select productivity and social media apps they are also aware when the device is folded, so they change in their regular orientation.
