TikTok has often been under the scrutiny of US lawmakers and users alike with concerns that user data is being transmitted and accessed by servers in China. With the explosion in popularity of TikTok in recent years, user data and the privacy of the platform have been discussed for a long time.

In a new relationship, Ace learned that Oracle has conducted an audit of TikTok’s operations. Specifically, Oracle is examining TikTok’s feed algorithm and content moderation models “to make sure they are not manipulated by Chinese authorities.”

During the Trump administration, TikTok faced a ban unless it divested its US assets to US companies Walmart and Oracle. After a judge blocked the ban on TikTok, the ban broke and TikTok nonetheless reached a partnership with Oracle to operate within its cloud infrastructure.

Since June, TikTok has been routing US user data via Oracle, but only after a BuzzFeed report revealed that Chinese engineers at ByteDance were accessing the private data of US TikTok users.

The popularity of TikTok has shifted the landscape among the most popular social apps. It also pushed both YouTube and Instagram to adopt their own versions of the TikTok videos (Short and Reels, respectively).
