Redmi announced 300W fast charging technology just four months after being the first brand to cross the 200W mark. The Xiaomi subsidiary has revealed that a phone can charge from 0 to 100% in less than five minutes, and later followed a video, providing more details on the technology.
The brand used a modified Redmi Note 12 Discovery smartphone with a 4,100mAh battery (the original version has dual 4,300mAh cells) in a controlled environment. It took the device 2 minutes and 11 seconds to reach 50%, and just under five minutes the battery was at 100%.
Interestingly, even though the video comes straight from Redmi’s Weibo account, the 300W claim falls short. The smartphone hits 290W for around three seconds before dropping back to less powerful (but still impressive) charging speeds – 300W is the theoretical maximum the charger and battery can reach, but the device is running out of power for safety reasons .
The adapter itself features Double GaN technology and has “more than 50 security protections” but still maintains a small size, Redmi said. What the Xiaomi brand hasn’t said is when we’ll see a real smartphone with the technology hit the open market.
