Apple has taken a long and difficult path to develop its own in-house 5G modem, and it appears the battle is not headed in the right direction. According to a new post on the South Korean platform, Naver, Supply chain sources close to Apple say Cupertino is restructuring investments in its modem development department as the company prepares to abandon the project altogether. Similar reports from Japanese supply chain sources were confirmed by a whistleblower @Tech_Reve which holds a reliable track record when it comes to Apple leaks.

Report: Apple abandons 5G modem development

In September, Apple extended its 5G modem deal with Qualcomm through 2026. All Apple devices so far have used modems made by Qualcomm. Cupertino was expected to switch to its internally developed 5G modem by 2026, but this development now seems unlikely. Apple has also run into legal trouble over modem patents held by Qualcomm that expire in 2030.
