One of the big gripes with Samsung foldables is that they still carry noticeable creases on their main displays, but that could change with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold5. A new report from Ship News hints that Samsung will introduce a new waterdrop hinge mechanism on the upcoming Z Fold model, which will eliminate the infamous screen crease by allowing the panel to fold completely flat.
2016 Samsung Display “droplet” foldable display hinge patent
The new hinge mechanism will see the foldable display form a teardrop shape within the hinge body, preventing creases between the two sides of the panel. We’ve already seen similar approaches with the Moto Razr and Oppo Find N series. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 phones still use U-shaped hinges that show noticeable creases and can’t close completely flat. Samsung is expected to maintain the IP68 water and dust resistance rating on the upcoming Z Fold5.
