Samsung just received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the sleep apnea feature in the Samsung Health Monitor app. This will detect signs of sleep apnea when using a compatible Galaxy Watch and Samsung phone combination in the US.
Which Galaxy Watch, are you wondering? It’s not clear yet, Samsung’s press release doesn’t talk about details, but it’s safe to assume that at least the Galaxy Watch6 series will get it. For what it’s worth, in Korea both the Watch6 and Watch5 family will support the feature, which has been previously approved by local relevant authorities.
The sleep apnea feature will allow you to detect signs of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea during a two-night monitoring period, starting in the third quarter of this year, when it is scheduled to launch (so between July and September).
To use it, you simply need to monitor your sleep twice for more than four hours over ten days. Apparently you’ll have to be over 22 to use the feature.
Sleep apnea is a common, chronic sleep condition that often goes undiagnosed and untreated. It causes you to stop breathing while you sleep and can cause your oxygen supply to stop. Therefore it can cause poor quality sleep and consequently fatigue during the day. Untreated sleep apnea can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias and stroke.
The National Sleep Foundation states that approximately 25 percent of men and 10 percent of women in the United States suffer from this condition. Samsung’s new feature will easily make it easier for more people to realize they have it, and if so, seek medical attention to reduce any health-related complications.
