Samsung unveiled its 10.7Gbps LPDDR5X RAM in April and promised to start mass production in the second half of this year. The new RAM chips have just taken a major step toward that goal, successfully completing verification at the advertised 10.7Gbps speed, the fastest in the industry.
This was done in collaboration between Samsung and MediaTek. The upcoming Dimensity 9400 was connected to 16GB of the new LPDDR5X RAM and this was used as a testbed for the new chips. It’s not an easy test though, the process took three months.
MediaTek isn’t providing any details about the new Dimensity 9400 chip, but it’s safe to assume it supports the new, faster mobile RAM. All MediaTek says is that the 9400 will arrive in the second half of this year (the Dimensity 9300 was announced in November 2023).
Samsung’s new LPDDR5X chips promise 25% improvements in power efficiency and performance (over the previous generation). The company is touting AI use cases, of course, as its smartphone sibling has made AI a core feature in its Galaxy S and Z series.
This RAM will be used in smartphones, of course, but LPDDR5 chips have also found their way into automotive applications. Artificial intelligence is a big buzzword in the automotive world, too, with a focus on autonomous driving rather than text and image generation.
“Working with Samsung Electronics has enabled MediaTek’s next-generation Dimensity chipset to become the world’s first to be validated at LPDDR5X operating speeds up to 10.7Gbps, enabling future devices to deliver AI capabilities and mobile performance at a level never seen before. This updated architecture will make it easier for developers and users to leverage more AI capabilities and benefit from more features with less impact on battery life,” said JC Hsu, Corporate Senior Vice President of MediaTek.
