There were some concerns about how Apple will implement USB-C on the upcoming iPhone 15 series. Researcher Majin Buu reports good news: the new cables won’t use Apple’s MFi chips for verification, so third-party cables and accessories won’t be limited (with Lightning, full compatibility is available only on accessories licensed by Apple).

It’s not all roses, however, Bu confirms that the normal iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will only have USB 2.0 ports. This means they will be limited to 480Mbps data rates, like the current Lightning port.

Charging will also be the same, limited to 20W. That said, Apple will include high-quality USB C-to-C cables with regular iPhones, which are 1.6m (5.3ft) long, compared to 1m for iPhones. Lightning cables that came with older iPhones.

They will support Power Delivery 3.0 (up to 20V at 3A, 60W) to boot, so owners will be able to charge even more powerful Apple devices like iPads and even MacBooks with these cables (and, of course, other electronic devices compatible with PD).

As for the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, they are expected to have a high-speed port: USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20 Gbps) or Thunderbolt 3 (40 Gbps). This sort of division makes sense when considering Apple tablets. The iPad Pros use Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 (40Gbps), the iPad Air has a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port (10Gbps), the regular iPad 10.9 has a USB 2.0 port.

In addition to faster transfer speeds, the iPhone 15 Pro duo is also expected to feature faster charging speeds — up to 35W, according to rumors, along with larger batteries than last year.
