It appears that Xiaomi has plans to discontinue the Xiaomi Cloud Gallery Sync feature. Developer Kacper Skrzypek has uncovered a draft announcement for it, but the company has yet to make it official.
For those unfamiliar with it, Gallery Sync has offered Xiaomi users 5 GB of free cloud storage that can hold photos and videos. But if this is your first time hearing about it, you have nothing to worry about.
As for those who use the feature, Xiaomi has apparently prepared a way to transfer photos and videos to Google Photos. And if you don’t want to, you’ll have the option to download a copy to store locally instead.
Gallery Sync also has a paid version that offers users more storage – Xiaomi will cancel subscriptions and issue a full refund.
The draft announcement uses placeholder dates (“XX XX 2022”), so it’s not clear when Gallery Sync will close, but it looks like it will happen this year. Keep in mind that the other Xiaomi Cloud services (synchronization and backup of contacts, messages and notes) will continue to work. Furthermore, it is possible that Gallery Sync will remain operational in China, but this has not been confirmed.
Here is an image showing how the photo transfer will work:
Gallery Sync users will be able to transfer photos and videos to Google Photos
Once the official announcement arrives, you will want to download or transfer your data sooner rather than later: it seems that Xiaomi will only keep the data for the whole of 2023 and delete it afterwards. The ad says “We offer a way to download Gallery data stored in Xiaomi Cloud to your personal device. Data download will only be available until XX, XX, 2023, after which this feature will no longer be supported. “
PS. the original ad was here, but it has been removed. Again, the timing of the arrest is unknown and it appears that it will be different in each region.
