Microsoft recently caused a stir by acquiring Activision Blizzard. Now, rival Sony has announced it is buying Bungie for $ 3.6 billion.

Bungie is arguably most famous for creating the Halo and Destiny franchises. These days, 343 handles everything Halo related, but what does the future hold for Destiny?

In an official post on Sony’s blog, Pete Parsons, CEO of Bungie, reassures fans that they will retain “creative freedom” after the acquisition. Some of that creative freedom means Destiny 2 won’t become a PlayStation exclusive. However, Sony is clearly counting on more than the Destiny franchise for their future success.

We know this because Bungie has been working on a new IP. There have been no public glimpses of what this IP is or even what kind of game it might be. But given that Bungie has revolutionized the FPS genre twice (first with Halo, then with Destiny), it seems Sony is counting on three love at first sight.

However, the new IP hasn’t slowed down the development of Destiny 2. In the same post, Parsons reminded players that Bungie is “hiring across disciplines for Destiny 2 and all new worlds beyond.” And as for Destiny 2, its Witch Queen expansion will receive a major update this month.

So, what do you think Bungie’s new mysterious IP is? Let us know in the comments!
