Valve has released a detailed look at the trackpad and gyro controls included in the Steam Deck, giving fans an idea of exactly how they will work when the device is released in December.
The new technical video, which was released in collaboration with IGN, shows how capacitive touch joysticks and gyro controls can combine together to give players more options when it comes to actually playing.
The gyroscope apparently gives users a lot of control in games, with precise and smooth movement similar to that available with a desktop mouse stand.
“We have capacitive touch joysticks,” said Valve designer Scott Dalton. “And one of the really cool things about this is that we can use it in conjunction with our gyro to turn gyro aiming and motion controls on or off in games.”
The fact that Steam Deck will support motion controls has drawn obvious parallels to the Nintendo Switch. However, Valve doesn’t see Nintendo’s hybrid console as a direct competitor, and the developer hasn’t designed the new device to challenge it.
“We tried to make all the decisions really in the Steam Deck that they aimed at [the PC gaming] public and this served customers who were already enjoying interacting with the games that are on that platform, on our platform, “Valve designer Greg Coomer said in a separate interview with IGN.
Meanwhile, Valve boss Gabe Newell is confident that the user base for each device is distinctive and that there will be a small crossover, telling IGN, “Let me say this way, if you’re a gamer and get a Switch, and get one of these, you’ll know which one is right for you, right?
