Valve isn’t worried that Steam Deck won’t be able to handle high-performance games, with the company confirming that it has not encountered any issues with the titles it has tested so far.
Speaking to IGN after the launch of a brand new video examining the hardware power of the handheld device, Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais explained that he is not too worried about the Steam Deck struggling to play high-end games.
“This is the first time we have reached the level of performance required to truly run the latest generation of games smoothly. All the games we wanted to be playable, in fact, the entire Steam library. We haven’t really found anything we could launch on this device that it couldn’t handle. “
Griffais also revealed that the 800p resolution and 30 FPS target for Steam Deck will help ensure it can play even the most demanding titles as it allows for significant scaling.
“If people start to heavily prioritize image quality, then we may be in a position where we may have compromises, but we haven’t seen it yet,” added Griffais.
Steam Deck uses a custom AMD APU running Zen 2 and RDNA 2. It also has 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM, which ensures it can run recent games on a smaller screen with no problems.
The Steam Deck is expected to launch in December, with prices starting at $ 400 for the cheapest model.
