MultiVersus, a Smash Bros.-style game coming with several Warner Bros. properties, was the game’s worst kept secret. Now, the game has been officially announced and a trailer has been released today to give us a better insight into this game.

At first glance, this game appears to be exactly what you’d expect: an opportunity for players to pit several iconic WB characters against each other. Would Arya Stark be able to defeat Harley Quinn? Will Shaggy be able to face Superman? These are the kinds of wacky questions this game sets out to answer.

It’s easy to dismiss this game as another Smash Bros. wannabe. However, the trailer shows us some unique new ideas, including an experience that encourages collaboration and cooperation instead of pressing buttons. Also, it looks like each character will have their own progression system and there will be plenty of skins to unlock.

Who will everyone be in the game? Below, we have the confirmed roster:

  • Batman
  • hairy (Scooby Doo)
  • Superman
  • Bugs Bunny
  • Wonder Woman
  • Arya Stark (game of Thrones)
  • Harley Quinn
  • Finn the Human (Adventure time)
  • Jake the dog (Adventure time)
  • Tom and Jerry
  • Steven Universe
  • garnet (Steven Universe)
  • Reindog (an original character created for this game)

When this game was first announced, many (including myself) thought it was the kind of IP economic and exploitative move that, ironically, Space Jam: a new legacy fooling around. But WB went to great lengths to involve strong actors (such as Matthew Lillard, Maisie Williams, Tara Strong, Kevin Conroy and many others). And the trailer explicitly mentions the “rollback netcode”, which provides a more stable online fighting game experience.

Put it all together and you have a game worth paying attention to. We don’t have a release date yet, but this free-to-play game will launch next year for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X | S.
